The month of Ramadan every year – a time of fasting, piety and self-reflection practiced by Muslims all over the world. Make this month a time for cultivating self-care habits, gratitude, and compassion for yourself and others.

Scroll down for self-care + wellness tips to practice throughout this Holy Month.

STAY HYDRATED

Water is essential for the overall well-being of the body. Between breakfast and dawn, make it a priority to restore hydration and replenish your body with water and healthy food. You can also increase water intake by incorporating hydrating food to your diet. Apples, cucumbers, peppers, watermelon, strawberries and spinach help you stay hydrated because they contain a lot of water.

So at Iftar, make a salad with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers or make a smoothie with hydrating ingredients like watermelon or strawberries, (which also contain skin-enhancing antioxidants), to stay sufficiently hydrated throughout the fast and help you get adequate amounts of fluids in your diet.

EATING HEALTHY DURING NON-FASTING HOURS

Eating healthily and limiting refined sugars is recommended as it will help you regulate your energy levels. Whole grains, root vegetables, fresh fruits, lean protein, healthy fat (fat from plants, like coconut oil and nuts) are all important to provide your body with the nutrients it needs.

MAINTAIN RADIANT & HEALTHY SKIN WHILE FASTING

Many of us experience dehydration, dullness and breakouts during Ramadan. It’s important to compensate for the lack of hydration during the day by adjusting your skin and haircare routine. To combat dehydration and restore your natural glow, choose the right moisturiser for your skin type and moisturise your skin regularly. If you have oily skin, you should opt for a non-comedogenic to avoid clogging of pores – use natural and organic cosmetics, masks and oils to nourish skin and hair. Throughout Ramadan, take resting breaks whenever possible as a lack of sleep can invite production of cortisol, the stress hormone.

A TIME TO REKINDLE MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

Ramadan is a time of mental, physical, and spiritual rejuvenation. Engaging in more mindful moments such as breath work or devotional rituals make us feel centred and calm . It also teaches us discipline and gratitude while also reminding us to be humble and give to those in need.

The liveliness and community spirit is a big part of Ramadan. Whether you choose to engage in an Iftar gathering with family, whip up a few dishes for a next-door neighbour or donate a meal to those in need, let’s reaffirm to live in kindness and love with family, friends and loved ones.

WISHING EVERYONE A BLESSED & PEACEFUL MONTH OF RAMADAN
